Mats pull skin and can hide sores. Use this triage to decide when to detangle and when to clip for comfort.
Triage the Coat
If mats cover >30% of the body, are tight to skin, or felting, plan a shave for pet welfare.
Detangling Method
- Saturate with detangling spray and work in thin slices.
- Use a mat splitter from tips inward; never yank at the skin.
- Time-box to 20 minutes; resume later to prevent soreness.
